To obtain an outlook on the latest insights into parasitic infestations as well as viruses, we spoke with Prof. Dr. Carmen Salavastru (Bucharest) about her upcoming EADV lecture “Scabies: What’s New?”.
Prof. Dr. Carmen Salavastru: “I chose to speak on the scabies update at the EADV Congress because scabies remains a significant and often underestimated public health challenge. Although it is a common condition worldwide, recent advances in our understanding of its epidemiology, diagnosis, and management make this an important time to revisit the topic.
The burden of scabies extends beyond the infestation itself, affecting quality of life and contributing to secondary bacterial infections and broader healthcare challenges. At the same time, clinicians are facing evolving issues such as outbreaks in institutional settings, diagnostic difficulties, and questions regarding optimal treatment strategies.
The EADV Congress provides an excellent platform to share the latest evidence, discuss emerging data, and exchange practical experiences with colleagues from across Europe and beyond. My goal is to help translate new scientific insights into everyday clinical practice so that patients can benefit from earlier diagnosis, more effective treatment, and improved disease control.
I also believe that increasing awareness of scabies among dermatologists and other healthcare professionals is essential. By bringing attention to recent developments and remaining unmet needs, we can contribute to better patient outcomes and support ongoing efforts to reduce the burden of this disease.
See you in Vienna!“
